Waitrose, Fulham Palace Road, London
This development was a mixed use scheme and involved the conversion of three existing shop units into a single open plan retail space for Waitrose, a vacant plot at the end of the terrace was built on to increase the retail space available for Waitrose whilst the upper units were refurbished and extended for residential use.
The challenges involved the retention of the external façade whilst opening up the ground floor and basement area to create an open plan shopping unit. Extensive temporary support structures were designed to enable the ground works to be completed prior to the erection of the internal supporting steel structure. Working within the confines of an existing Edwardian structure required both vertical and horizontal setting out to be considered when designing the steel structure and to maximize retail space.
